10th anniversary of President’s inauguration

Astana, 21 January 2009, Khabar - On the 20th of January 10 years ago, President Nursultan Nazarbayev officially took the oath of office at his inauguration in Astana. At the end of 1998, the Republic’s lower house, the Majilis, took the decision to hold pre-term presidential elections in January 1999 due to fresh constitutional amendments one of which was to extend the Presidential term from 5 to 7 years. Over 15 thousand observers and journalists from 22 countries were overseeing Kazakhstan elect its president. Then, Nursultan Nazarbayev gained close to 80% of the votes taking a landslide victory leaving his opponents far behind. At that time, almost 6 million people of Kazakhstan confirmed their will to follow the course outlined by the Republic’s first president. This is the first media conference involving Nursultan Nazarbayev after his fair victory.

Nursultan Nazarbayev, President of Kazakhstan:
- I am completely satisfied with the outcomes. I am also a human being. Over the past 100 days, I have been working hard and worrying a lot. Now, I must sincerely thank the people of Kazakhstan who supported me and allowed me to continue my presidential duty.

Ten days after the election, the republic held an inauguration on the 20th of January 1999. The event took place in Astana. The President walked to the congress hall along a white carpet accompanied with seven gun volleys. Following ancient Kazakh traditions, Nursultan Nazarbayev took the oath of office standing on a snow-white felt mat.
1999 was a difficult year for Kazakhstan as consequences of the Asian financial crisis had their negative influence on the Republic’s economy. The, the country’s GDP was only 1130 per capita as oil prices sharply decreased triggering inflation. Led by Nursultan Nazarbayev, Kazakhstan managed to survive the crisis and began developing.

Kuanysh Sultanov, Senator of RK:
- Since 1999, Kazakhstan has begun developing rapidly thanks to its reformation. Over 10 years, we have constructed more schools, hospitals, and solved the issues of drinking water supplies as well as those in terms of healthcare and improvements in education and culture. We have also been supporting the needy, big families and the youth.

Today, Kazakhstan has to join the world’s leading countries and overcome the negative consequences of the world financial crisis with the least losses. Just like ten years ago, the President’s strategy is aimed at the improvement of people’s welfare and the reservation of inter-ethnic accord.
