‘CLEAN ENVIRONMENT’ MONTHLY CAMPAIGN UNDERWAY

Ulaanbaatar /MONTSAME/ ‘Clean environment’ a monthly campaign is being organized with an aim to promote newly revised Waste Law, approved by Parliament on May 12 and to start realization of the law. The Ministry of Environment and Tourism announced to run the campaign from June 1 to July 1 at aimag, city, soum and district level with a prize fund for stimulation.
‘- A total of 2.1-2.4 million tons of waste have been accumulated in central dumping sites over the last years, among which household waste makes up 90.9 per cent and industrial waste is the remaining 9.1 per cent. Moreover, a huge area of land is polluted due to dumping in non-specified areas and a great amount of money is spent from state budget for collecting them. As of 2015, 104690 tons of waste, accumulated at 415 non-specified areas were transported away, cleaning 34724 ha of land. Hazardous waste is being thrown away mixed with household garbage, polluting the soil and water in some areas, as there is no specific facility or area for hazardous waste. The current condition requires us to pay special attention to waste management and collaborate all together. Therefore, our ministry is organizing the campaign to involve all central and local state administrations, organizations and citizens to waste management and take unified measures nationwide” said Minister of Environment and Tourism D.Oyunkhorol. The minister noted that according to revised Waste law, the payment rate for dumping will be renewed, so that one, who creates more waste will pay more.
The campaign will focus on publicizing the revised law, raising awareness on reduction, sorting and recycling of waste, public clean-up and resolving some pressing issues including hazardous waste dumping and issuing necessary regulations.
In connection with the campaign, the Ministry of Environment and Tourism held an online conference with all Governors of aimag, officials of Specially Protected area administrations, giving assignments and instructions related to measures and actions to be taken within the campaign in the near future.
