941 Migrants Rescued From Human Traffickers

KUALA LUMPUR, Feb 25 (Bernama) -- The Home Ministry rescued 941 people, including children from becoming victims of human trafficking from 2008 until Jan 31 this year. Its secretary-general, Mahmood Adam said 562 of them were women followed by men (261) and children (118). "The victims were sheltered and given the Permanent Protection Order," he told Bernama in a statement, Saturday. Mahmood, who is also Council for Anti-Trafficking in Persons and Anti-smuggling of Migrants chairman, said during the period, the authorities investigated 426 cases and made 599 arrests. He said 392 cases were charged under the Anti-Trafficking in Persons and Anti-Smuggling of Migrants Act 2007, 235 cases still in trials, 66 cases solved and 57 convictions. "The authorities solved 27 smuggling of migrants cases from Nov 15, 2010 to Jan 31 this year involving 43 arrests and 616 migrants rescued," he said. -- BERNAMA
