Biometric System Proves Malaysian Govt's Seriousness In Monitoring Foreigners' Entry

KUALA LUMPUR, Dec 8 (Bernama) -- The implementation of the biometric registration system for foreigners proves the government's seriousness in monitoring the entry of foreigners, especially from Africa, into Malaysia. Deputy Home Minister Lee Chee Leong told the Senate Wednesday that the system was further strengthened with the development of the Advanced Passenger Screening System (APSS), which allowed for fast and efficient screening of foreigners before they could make their trip to Malaysia. He said the system involved nationwide biometric registration and monitoring of foreigners upon arrival, while in this country and when departing. "The ministry has also set up a special sub-unit for student visas through collaboration with the Higher Education Ministry, Education Ministry, Skills Development Department, Immigration Department and the police in dealing with the influx of foreigners and procedures involved in taking in foreign students." Lee said this in reply to Senator Datuk Paul Kong Sing Chu who wanted to know the measures taken by the government to curb the entry of foreign students, especially from African countries, who purportedly wanted to pursue higher education but became involved in serious crime here. He said the tasks of the sub-unit included carring out concerted operations with Rela, the local authorities and Human Resources Ministry to detect, arrest, prosecute and expel foreigners who violated this country's laws. "Those who contravene Regulation 39 (b) of the Immigration Regulations 1963 will be blacklisted and sent back to their country of origin," he added. -- BERNAMA
