COVID-19: Thailand Records 59 New Cases, One More Death
BANGKOK, Jan 20 (Bernama) -- Thailand recorded 59 new COVID-19 cases and one death over the last 24 hours, bringing the tally in the kingdom to 12,653 cases and 71 fatalities.
The Centre for COVID-19 Situation Administration (CCSA) assistant spokesperson Dr Apisamai Srirangsan said the single fatality involved a 48-year-old Thai woman who is a driver ferrying migrant workers to and from their workplace in Mae Sot, Tak Province. The woman tested positive for COVID-19 on Dec 27.
Of the 59 new COVID-19 cases, she said 51 were local transmissions including 23 through active case detection, and eight imported cases.
“Active case detection exercise will continue in various provinces despite the number of COVID-19 infections in the country decreasing,” she said at COVID-19 daily briefing Wednesday.
Meanwhile, Thai Prime Minister Prayuth Chan o-cha said relevant authorities would assess the current COVID-19 situation in the kingdom especially in Bangkok and 27 high-risk provinces (designated as high-risk areas where more than 50 COVID-19 cases have been reported) before considering relaxing the restrictions.
“The restrictions imposed to contain the spread of COVID-19 at these provinces since Jan 4, will continue at least until end of this month,” he said.
The measures to curb the spread of COVID-19 including a ban on public gatherings and limiting the operating hours for businesses in high-risk provinces.
