COVID-19: Thailand Records One New Case, Zero Deaths

By Linda Khoo Hui Li BANGKOK, June 5 (Bernama) – Thailand has reported one new COVID-19 case – a Thai man who returned from Kuwait - and zero fatalities over the last 24 hours, bringing the total confirmed cases to 3,102 with 58 deaths. Centre for COVID-19 Situation Administration (CCSA) spokesman Thaweesilp Wissanuyothin said the 45-year-old man returned to Thailand on May 24 and is now undergoing a 14-day quarantine at the state facility. He was tested positive COVID-19 in a second test. “To date, there are 165 Thais nationals at state quarantine facilities were tested positive COVID-19. Of 165 cases, there are 31 Thai returnees from Kuwait, the highest number of infected cases under state quarantine,” he said at the COVID-19 daily briefing Friday. Since the outbreak in January, 2,971 patients have recovered and discharged from hospitals while another 73 remain warded. To boost the badly-hit domestic tourism sector, Thailand plans to draw up a stimulus plan which is expected to be rolled out in July to October. The proposed plan includes gift vouchers, cash handouts and special offers to encourage some 1.2 million medical personnel and health volunteers to travel. Tourism Authority of Thailand (TAT) governor Yuthasak Supasorn said TAT will submit the plan to Ministry of Finance by next week. Local media reported that TAT is seeking the Finance Ministry's approval to give 3,000 baht to 4 million people for domestic travel, aiming to help local tour operators. TAT estimated the number of foreign tourists in Thailand may drop to 14 million compared to 39.8 million last year due to the COVID-19 pandemic. -- BERNAMA
