Green Housing Areas As Ecotourism Attractions

KUALA LUMPUR, Nov 22 (Bernama) -- Housing areas in the federal capital have the potential to become ecotourism attractions if every resident plant at least seven trees in their respective housing areas, said Tourism Deputy Minister Dr James Dawos Mamit. He said the voluntary initiative would not only beautify the housing areas and the surrounding landscapes, but could also help reduce environmental warming. Considering the limited land in the federal capital, Dawos said suitable plants which could be planted included flowering and hydroponic plants, and cactus. "We understand that in urban areas, land for planting is limited, so growing flowers in pots would be adequate," he said at the National Tourism Seminar 2011, here, on Monday. Dawos also said that the green lungs in the federal capital could only absorb 1.8 per cent of the carbon dioxide generated and not enough to reduce environmental warming. -- BERNAMA Malaysia
