Indonesia - Australia Agree To End Violence Against Women

Jakarta, Nov 25 (Antara) - The governments of Indonesia and Australia have agreed to join hands to end violence against women. "We realize that women of all ages across the world face violence. So, Australia is committed to collaborating with other countries, including Indonesia, to end violence against women," Australian Ambassador to Indonesia Greg Moriarty said here on Tuesday. Indonesia and Australia will conduct awareness campaigns on Nov. 25 to coincide with White Ribbon Day. "The campaign in Indonesia will focus on sexual violence. Around 137 organizations in 28 provinces and 73 cities will participate," he noted. The organizations will educate people about violence against women through public discussions, movies, cyber campaign, and social media contests. Moriarty also extended support to the 16-day campaign organized by the National Commission on Violence Against Women (Komnas Perempuan). "We support 16 Days of Activism Against Gender Violence, an international campaign organized by Komnas Perempuan to encourage public participation in the elimination of violence against women," he remarked. According to the National Commission on Violence Against Women, as of March 2014, 279,760 cases of violence against women, or 35 cases per day, had been recorded. Komnas Perempuan has been working with the Australian government since 2006 to realize its mission.
