Lada Launches Clean-Up Programme In Langkawi's Town

LANGKAWI (Kedah, Malaysia), Jan 31 (Bernama) -- The Langkawi Development Authority (Lada) launched "Ops Bersih" (Clean-up operation) 2012 Monday night for the clean-up of Kuah town to ensure that the legendary resort island of Langkawi remains clean always. Lada chief executive officer Khalid Ramli said the programme, involving 700 people from various agencies, was held from 10 pm to 4 am in Kuah town to avert traffic congestion. The Solid Waste and Public Cleansing Management Corporation, Langkawi Tourism City Municipal Council and other government agencies were also involved in the programme, he added. Khalid said the programme is a continuation of the series of clean-up programmes held previously, and is in keeping with the Langkawi Tourism Blueprint launched by Prime Minister Najib Razak on Dec 8 last year. "Lada will ensure that clean-up programmes are held regularly to instill the need in the community and to make Langkawi clean and beautiful as well as one of the 10 most popular islands by 2015," he said. Khalid said 50 tonnes of refuse are collected daily on the island, off northern state of Kedah. -- BERNAMA Malaysia Langkawi
