LOCAL FELT QUILT-MAKERS INCREASE TYPES OF PRODUCTS

Ulaanbaatar /MONTSAME/ The ‘Uyangalag’ women’s group of Tes Soum, Uvs Aimag made decorations and crafts for Mongolian traditional gers by stitching and quilting felt.
The set of craft consists of over 50 felt works with 20 types such as curtain, arras (wall hanging), rugs and other floorings, couples of cover for the hole in the roof, olbog or cushions, pouches for cup, spoon and ankle bones, sewing needle container, toilet paper and tissue boxes, and cover of chair and sofa.
The leader of the group Ts.Batnasan initiated the work and created it with the participation of six members. They said that it took five months to make the set of craft using just processed felt.
Ts.Batnasan said that the group has made set of craft for four to five Mongolian gers. In order to make the craft, the quilt makers use 100 meter square of processed felt for one ger. The group has made two to three curtains and 100 cushions for men and women by orders. A curtain is sold at MNT 2.9 million.
Mrs.Ts.Batnasan told that she is working towards registering a saddle of Bayad ethnic group in the world heritage. Since establishing the group, felt quilt makers in 2016, Ts.Batnasan has been learning much about quilting and stitching art. So far, members of ‘Uyangalag’ group have reached 21 and they are striving to improve their skills, having lessons on Byad quilting given by a professional teacher.
The group ‘Uyangalag’ also supplies their products to cross-border neighbor Tuva, the Russian Federation by orders. They will participate and promote their products during the ‘Days of Uvs Aimag’ to be held in Kyzyl on May 26-27.
