Low-cost housing units for migrant workers

AMUT SAKORN, June 9 (TNA) – The Baan Eua-arthorn low-cost housing project have been provided for migrant workers in Samut Sakorn. The project is the model of proper accommodation for laborers in line with the government’s policy on residential zoning for migrant workers. Deputy Prime Minister Adm Narong Pipatanasai today presided over the opening of the Eua-arthorn center at the Eua-arthorn low-cost housing unit in Samut Sakorn. The center provides information on the residential zoning project and offers service for migrants in various fields such as public health, education, consulting service and labour registration. The Ministry of Social Development and Human Security and the Ministry of Labour earlier launched a pilot residential zoning project for employers to rent housing units for migrant labourers. Baan Eua-arthorn housing unit in Samut Sakorn have 54 buildings with 2,676 units in total. Each four-storey building offers 33 square-metre room. Twenty-seven buildings of the low-cost housing units are available for Thais. The other 29 buildings can accommodate 5,000 migrant workers. Currently, 846 units are occupied by 3,000 foreign workers. There are about 300,000 migrant laborers in the province. About 258,757 people are Myanmar nationals, 19,825 others are Cambodians and the rest of 10,066 people are from Laos. (TNA)
