Lynas Residue Will Be Moved Far Away From Any Settlement: M'sian Pm

KOTA BAHARU (Kelantan, Malaysia), March 3 (Bernama) -- Malaysian prime minister Najib Razak announced Friday that the residue from the Lynas rare earth plant in Gebeng, Kuantan in Pahang state, will be moved to another location far away from any settlement. The prime minister said the decision was made after taking into account the concerns of the local the community. "Although experts have proof, including declarations by international bodies, that the residue is safe, there are people who are still apprehensive about it. "So we have decided that the residue will be moved to another place," he told reporters after a meet-the-people event and a get-together with Kelantan professionals here on Friday. He added that the government was still looking into the location and would make an announcement later. He rejected the notion that the decision was made following pressure from the opposition. "We want the people to feel safe," he added. The opposition parties staged several demonstrations to protest against the setting up of the plant last Sunday. -- BERNAMA
