Malaysia: Civil Law Act 1956 To Be Amended

KUALA LUMPUR, Nov 30 (Bernama) - The Malaysian government plans to amend the Civil Law Act 1956 (Act 67) to increase the amount of compensation awarded for injury and death. Deputy Finance Minister Datuk Donald Lim Siang Chai said the proposal will be brought to Cabinet for discussion. He said the Ministry of Finance (MOF) has held discussions with consumers and insurance companies on the existing premium scheme. "We plan to raise the premium on compensation for injury and death and hope that it can be completed by 2016," he said when answering a question by Manogaran Marimuthu, an opposition MP at Lower House of Parliament here Wednesday. The MP wants to know whether the government agrees to amend the Civil Law Act 1956 (Act 67) to increase the compensation awarded for injury and death. Lim said the government is sensitive of the issue adding MOF will cooperate and discuss with the Malaysian Bar Council to increase the compensation. - BERNAMA
