Malaysian Maritime Enforcement Agency Detains Tanker For Sailing Without Insurance
MELAKA, (Malaysia), March 25 (Bernama) -- The Malaysian Maritime Enforcement Agency (MMEA) detained a tanker for allegedly sailing without insurance, Wednesday.
Melaka and Negeri Sembilan MMEA director Maritime Captain Haris Fadzillah Abdullah said the tanker was detained at 4.20pm at about 1.9 nautical miles southwest of Tanjung Keling, Melaka, a coastal state situated in southwestern part of Malaysia.
He said acting on information obtained from the Marine Department, an MMEA patrol boat detected the tanker that anchored at the Melaka port.
“Preliminary investigations found that the MT PENNY H tanker, registered in Tanzania was operated by 24 crew members of Chinese national, aged between 22 and 46, who have valid identification documents,” he said in a statement.
However, Haris Fadzillah said the captain of the tanker failed to present any insurance document as required by the Limitation of Liability of Maritime Claims (LLMC) from the Malaysian Marine Department director and was suspected of committing an offence under the Merchant Shipping Ordinance 1952.
The tanker and all the crew members were detained and the case was handed over to the investigating officer of the Melaka and Negeri Sembilan MMEA headquarters for further action, he added.
