M'sian Govt Will Consider Proposal To Jail Reckless Drivers Causing Fatal Accidents
KUALA LUMPUR, Jan 25 (Bernama) -- The government is ready to consider a
proposal to impose mandatory jail sentence on reckless drivers who caused deaths
in road accidents, Home Minister Hishammuddin Hussein said.
However, the task of reviewing the proposal of such punishment comes under
the jurisdiction of the Attorney General, he said.
"The government can only support or consider a proposal...but anything
related to law, including punishment, falls under the jurisdiction of the
Attorney General's office," he said.
Hishammuddin said police only play the role of enforcement and abide by the
laws available, including punishment accorded for any offence," he told
reporters after visiting a Shooting Simulation System centre here.
He was commenting on the statement made by Road Safety Council member
Lee Lam Thye, who called for a mandatory jail sentence to be imposed, on
reckless drivers who caused death in road accidents.
Hishammuddin when visiting the centre said the simulation centre would be
used by police personnel to enhance their shooting skills and efficiency in
using weapons.
"Police must look at the positive contributions that the centre can offer to
policemen to sharpen their shooting skills through the various training
facilities available. The simulation system can at the same time reduce the cost
of training because bullets will not be used," he said.
"Shooting Simulation System" or VR 3S is an integrated programme that uses
computer technology to provide tactical training when carrying out shooting
practice.
The system also provides laser, sensor monitor, data processing, realistic
weapon control methods using audio and video technology.
