Myanmar quake felt in Thailand
BANGKOK, November 11 (TNA) - A strong quake measuring 6.6 on the Richter scale shook Myanmar’s northern region early Sunday and the tremor could be felt by people staying in high-rise buildings in the Bangkok as they evacuated from buildings for their safety, officials said.
The Meteorological Department announced that the quake jolted the region at 8.12 a.m. (0112 GMT). The epicenter, with a depth of 10 km, was initially determined to be at 22.93 degrees north latitude and 95.99 degrees east longitude.
Although no casualties were reported by the tremor, people staying in high-rise buildings in Bangkok were panic and decided to temporarily evacuated from the structures for their own safety, eyewitnesses said.
Thanarat Phummakasikorn, director of Sirikit Dam in Uttaradit province, said the dam was not affected by the quake. Engineers later inspected the quake measurements installed at the dam and found that the tremor did not affect the major dam.
Thanarat said the quake epicenter was still far away from the dam which is strong enough to withstand against the natural disaster. (TNA)
