New Media And Traditional Media Can Help Strengthen Democracy

KUALA LUMPUR, Nov 16 (Bernama) - The new media and traditional media can play a very important role to strengthen democratic practices in this country. The Sun political editor Zainon Ahmad said democracy could be strengthened by giving freedom to the people to gain information to enable them make choices. "In a democracy, we have to go through elections where we have to choose candidates and parties. But how can we choose if there is no complete information on the candidates and parties. "Thus, information is a must," he said in the 'Kerusi Panas' (Hot Seat) programme on Radio24 Bernama here Tuesday night. Zainon said that vital information will help the people make the right choice during elections. The newspaper editor also said monopoly of television, radio stations and newspapers by certain companies should end as it is not a healthy trend. "The monopoly does not help efforts to strengthen democracy but curtail different views," he added. -- BERNAMA
