OIC envoys satisfied with Thailand’s assistance for Rohingya migrants

SONGKHLA, THAILAND, January 31 (TNA) - Diplomats from member countries of the Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) have expressed their satisfaction with Thailand’s aid for illegal Rohingya immigrants from neighbouring Myanmar. Krissada Boonrat, Governor of Thailand's southern Songkhla province, told reporters of the positive development on Thursday, after receiving Thai Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Surapong Tovichakchaikul, who led the 17 OIC envoys to visit the Rohingya migrants at Songkhla's home for women and children, under the Ministry of Social Development and Human Security, where 79 Rohingya women and 26 children have been sheltered. The Songkhla governor said the OIC diplomats appeared to be satisfied after learning that the Rohingya Muslims have received good care in Thailand and become healthier and they later went to another home of assistance in nearby Pattani province to visit illegal Rohingya male migrants. According to the governor, the OIC envoys were gathering updated information for further talks on the possibility of sending the illegal Rohingya migrants back to their home country or to third countries. Meanwhile, people in Moo 7 village of the Chalung locality in Songkhla's Hat Yai district assisted eight more exhausted Rohingya men from a rubber plantation in which they might have escaped from local authorities' round-up. The eight Rohingya Muslims were then taken to the Sadao immigration checkpoint in Songkhla for their temporary stay. (TNA)
