Permanent Mission participates in World Bicycle Day celebrations

New York, Jun. 5 (BNA): The Permanent Mission of the Kingdom of Bahrain to the United Nations in New York participated in the celebration of the anniversary of the World Bicycle Day, which falls on the 3rd of June each year, held at the headquarters of the Organisation with the participation of the President of the United Nations General Assembly, Mrs. María Fernanda Espinosa, the Under-Secretary-General for Global Communications, and a number of athletes and activists in the field of promoting the use of bicycles as a healthy and safe way to navigate. The President of the United Nations General Assembly stressed that the bike is a sustainable, simple, clean and environmentally friendly means of transportation, while climate change is considered one of the most serious threats facing the world, noting that the bicycle can be a tool for development and as a means not only for transport but also for access to education, health care and sports and is closely linked to the achievements of the sustainable development goals. She thanked the countries that had submitted the draft resolution last year and the sponsors of this event, which was adopted on June 3 as a global day for bicycles, namely, the Kingdom of Bahrain, Turkmenistan, Canada, India, Indonesia and Liechtenstein. She praised this important initiative which comes within the efforts of member countries to combat climate change and achieve development goals. CEO and Co-Founder of Novo-Nordisk, Mr. Phil Sutherland, spoke about the importance of cycling in improving the health of individuals and communities, reviewing his personal experience as a diabetic patient. He said that by adopting a healthy lifestyle through riding a bike and promoting health practices, he has significantly improved his health and prompted his company to work with several communities around the world to promote bicycles to help people of all age groups to exercise and contribute to combating climate change. All speakers commended the initiative of the Kingdom of Bahrain and the Group of States which contribute on a daily basis to reducing the use of mobility that exacerbates climate change and promotes very positively the health of all members of society of different ages, wishing this initiative more success in the coming years.
