Police, KNKT To Jointly Investigate train Accident
Jakarta, Dec 10 (Antara) - The police and the National Committee of Transportation Safety (KNKT) are jointly investigating Monday`s train accident in Bintaro that killed six people and wounded another 80.
"We are cooperating with the KNKT to investigate the cause of the accident," head of the public information bureau of the National Police Brigadier General Boy Rafly Amar said at the National Police Headquarters here on Tuesday.
He added that the result of the police inquiries would be integrated with the result of the KNKT investigations.
"This is being done because the railway system is governed by special regulations," he noted.
He also said the police would use the proper perspective and objective while investigating the accident.
"We will study whether any laws were broken in the accident," he added.
He said, so far, the police had found four witnesses, namely local community members and a person in charge of controlling the railway crossing gates.
In a related development, the head of Operations I of state railway company PT KAI, Heru Isnadi, said the collision between the Serpong-Tanah Abang commuter train and the PT Pertamina truck carrying fuel oil in Bintaro, South Jakarta, on Monday was caused by the truck driver, who was negligent.
After visiting the accident`s wounded patients in Suyoto hospital on Tuesday, Vice President Boediono stated that railway lines should be constructed on elevated tracks in the cities to avoid accidents.
In the short term, he suggested that underpasses could also be constructed at busy railway crossings.
