Qatar Praises UNCHR Efforts to Resolve Refugee Problem
Geneva, December 12 (QNA) - The State of Qatar has confirmed that the refugee problem is one of the complex problems of multiple aspects with diverge links related to the respect for human rights, armed conflicts, development and preservation of the environment, stressing that no effort will succeed without a political will and pooled efforts of the international community for reaching a practical solutions to this problem.
The State of Qatar said this end could be achieved through an integrated approach addressing all aspects and stemming from ethical and humanitarian considerations, and conviction in the close link between the solutions to the problems of refugees and stability and security in its broad sense, which includes the security of individuals and peoples as well as the security of nations and governments.
This came in the speech of Permanent Mission of the State of Qatar to the United Nations Office at Geneva, delivered today by Khalid Fahd Al-Hajri, the Mission's acting Charge d'Affaires during the 5th High Commissioner's Dialogue on Protection Challenges on protection challenges, which was dedicated to the theme: Faith and Protection.
Al-Hajri expressed thanks and appreciation to the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) and all who contributed to the holding of this effective dialogue, adding that " our presence today lies within effort aimed to address the problem of refugees, which is considered one of the most important and pressing humanitarian issues and to try to find solutions and identify responsibilities to alleviate the suffering of refugees, and provide them with adequate protection.
He stressed that it is known to all that the rights of refugees is part of the human rights, explaining that Article 14 of the text of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights reads: "Everyone has the right to seek and to enjoy in other countries asylum from persecution. This right may not be invoked in the case of prosecutions genuinely arising from non-political crimes or from acts contrary to the purposes and principles of the United Nations.''
Al-Hajri said persecution is no longer the only element which establishes the right to asylum, adding that most recently new circumstances other than individual persecution forced many people to flee, or leave their original countries and emigrate to other countries.
Therefore, the refugee problem is one of the complex problems of multiple aspects with diverge links related to the respect for human rights, armed conflicts, development and preservation of the environment, stressing that no effort will succeed unless without a political will and concerted efforts of the international community for reaching a practical solutions to this problem, Al-Hajri said.
