Security beefed up in Thai south during Ramadan

SONGKHLA, May 29 (TNA) – Local police in the Thai southern province of Songkhla are on high security alert amid fears of possible unrest incidents during the Muslim holy month of Ramadan. The police in several districts of Songkhla, including Hat Yai, Sadao and the provincial seat, and others bordering Pattani, Yala and Narathiwat provinces, have been asked to tighten their security measures during Ramadan, which started on Saturday. The Sadao police station on Sunday deployed vehicles fitted with speakers to community areas in order to make announcements, calling for public vigilance against unrest. Local people were also asked to report any suspicious activities to the police once they see them in their living area. A police officer from the Sadao police station said security has been tightened in a bid to prevent violence, which could have adverse impact on trade, economy and tourism in the city. (TNA)
