Thai PM calls for measures to response flood threat
BANGKOK, July 27 (TNA) – Prime Minister Prayut Chan-o-cha on Thursday ordered all relevant agencies to prepare for possible floods after tropical storm Sonca approached the country.
Gen Prayut, who is also the head of the ruling National Council for Peace and Order, said all agencies concerned have been instructed to develop measures to prevent flooding caused by Sonca. When floods occur, they should provide quick drainage services in order to minimize flood damage, he said.
The Thai leader added that Thailand has better situation than regional peers which were directly hit by Sonca. The tropical storm made landfall in central Vietnam on Tuesday before weakening to a tropical depression and then a low pressure over Thailand.
Still, the active low pressure covers the country’s Northeast, and it is expected to dissipate by July 28, according to the Thai Meteorological Department. As a result, local people have been told to beware of flash floods from severe weather conditions. (TNA)
