Thailand presents its serious efforts to solve marine pollution

MALTA, Oct 6 (TNA) -- The Thai Agriculture and Cooperatives Minister Chatchai Sarikulya attended the 4th Our Ocean Conference on Oct 5 and 6 in Malta and presented Thailand’s serious efforts to solve marine pollution. General Chatchai said the conference with the theme of “An Ocean for Life” was a forum for global authorities in the field of environmental conservation, science and technology to discuss solutions to marine pollution as fishing operations and climate changes were affecting the sea. According to him, the conference urged participants to join forces to reduce marine pollution, promote the sustainable management of marine resources, decrease climate changes and establish marine sanctuaries. Thailand told the conference that its fisheries adhered to the maximum sustainable yield principle and its authorities were seriously tackling illegal, unreported and unregulated fishing. Gen Chatchai also said that the Thai government planned to seriously protect 10% of its coastlines and waters within 2030 for the sake of environmental conservation. Under the plan, it will declare fish sanctuaries, mangrove protection zones and fishing ban periods. “The Our Ocean Conference started in 2014. It has worked out about 250 plans worldwide and declared marine protection zones over 9.9 million square kilometers of the sea,” Gen Chatchai said. (TNA)
