Thailand sets up first wastewater monitoring centre

BANGKOK, July 17 (TNA) – A wastewater monitoring and reporting centre, the first of its kind in Thailand is set up for comprehensive wastewater management. Natural Resources and Environment Ministry secretary-general Wijarn Simachaya today presided over the opening of the center, solely run by the Wastewater Management Authority. The center oversees 39 wastewater management systems, including those of local authorities and the royally-initiated projects. The newly-established center is tasked with compiling information on water quality and providing real-time reports for effective wastewater management. Wijarn said that each person uses about 150-200 litres daily and this amount of water becomes wastewater but less than half of wastewater is treated properly. Moreover, less than 50 per cent of about 100 wastewater systems across the country can work at full capacity. In the future, the center will link its system to other agencies for the development of the country’s wastewater management effectively and sustainably, he added. (TNA)
