UB Mayor looks over waste recycling plants

Ulaanbaatar /MONTSAME/ “We are working towards full recycling system of Ulaanbaatar's city solid waste starting from 2020”, remarked Mayor of Ulaanbaatar S.Batbold during his working visit to Tsagaan Davaa landfill site on March 31, Friday. He was looking over the operations of waste recycling plants with an aim to find proper solutions to air and soil pollution in the capital city. The Mayor visited ‘Inarchis’ company which recycles tyres and produces pavement and playground blocks, the home of citizen B.Gantulga who classifies solid waste and sells to recycling plants, ‘Khev Khashmal Khuvantsar’ company which imports primary raw materials and produces utensils, chair, shoe rack and puzzle game and ‘Sain Tsaas’ paper mill. The companies and the individual shared their problems and accomplishments with the Mayor who in return offered advices and answers in regard to their inquiries. The Tsagaan Davaa landfill site is one of the three major landfill sites that receive solid waste from the capital city. The Ulaanbaatar residents produce some 3000 tons of waste on daily basis which is buried by using landfill technology. This measure of waste disposal will continue until 2020. “In order to start recycling waste, the first step to take is waste classification on household level”, said B.Byambadorj, Head of Urban Refurbishment Department. The Mayor responded that he would look into the matter of waste classification and said, “Many entities interested in waste recycling contact us; unfortunately, they usually don’t have a technical and economic assessment on the solid waste of Ulaanbaatar city”. “Mongolia will soon transition to waste recycling system”, said G.Nyamdavaa, a division head at the Ministry of Environment and Tourism. He continued, “Parliament adopted a law on waste which has yet to be revised; we are working towards having the revised law approved during this spring session of the Parliament”.
