Kaaba Kiswa to be Changed in Early Muharram, 9,900 Silk Threads per Meter, 10 Phases for Manufacturing
Makkah, July 16, 2023, SPA – The King Abdulaziz Complex for Holy Kaaba Kiswa at the General Presidency for the Affairs of the Grand Mosque and the Prophet’s Mosque is planning to weave the Kaaba cloth (kiswa) and ensure it is of the highest quality.
The process consists of 10 phases.
The first starts with desalination, through setting the temperature of water used to wash the silk of the kiswa. The second entails dyeing the outer side of kiswa black and the inner, and the Prophet’s Chamber, green, after washing the cloth at high temperatures to remove the protecting layers of wax.
The third phase includes taking random samples from the cloth, before and after dyeing, to ensure its quality. The fourth is automated weaving comprising of more than (9900) threads per meter of silk, the fifth entails printing Quranic verses on the Kaaba belt, and the sixth consists of manual embroidery.
During the seventh phase, Quranic verses and Islamic inscriptions are embroidered with gold-plated silver wire threads, while during the eighth phase the quality is checked, with the aim of ensuring the highest quality standard. Workers assemble the kiswa during the ninth phase, while the last entails replacing the old kiswa with the new.
