Hindu Celebrates Maasi Magam Event

GEORGE TOWN (Penang, Malaysia), March 8 -- Crowds gathered at Teluk Bahang, a fishing village situated on the northwestern part of Penang Island in Malaysia to celebrate Maasi Magam, a special event for the Hindus worldwide on Wednesday evening. The 115 year-old Sri Singamuga Kaliamman Temple carried out Theppa Thiruvila (Floating Chariot) as an annually event to pay respect towards Goddess Sri Singamuga and the chariot was decorated with colourful lights. The Goddess was also marched to the sea and river followed by a worship ceremony done throughout the day. When the Goddess aboards the chariot, the Hindus then released different types of oil lamps to the sea as way to gain blessings from the Goddess. The marching ceremony began from the temple towards the sea, later the chariot was pulled using a boat. The ceremony was attended by thousands of Hindus from all over the world. Fireworks were also seen to enlighten the event and was participated by tourists from Singapore, Thailand, Indonesia, Austria and U.S. According to the Hindu astrology system, Magam is named as one of the 27 stars.
