Volunteers from Kyrgyzstan participate in cleaning Arctic from scrap metal

Bishkek, July 25, 2018. / Kabar /. Volunteers from Russia, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan and Israel started collecting scrap metal on the uninhabited island of Vilkitsky, which is located in the east of the Kara Sea. During the ecological expedition it is also planned to conduct scientific research, the press service of the Kazakh embassy in Russia reports. "A group of volunteers started working. To date, there is still quite a lot of ice around the island, there are no bears around, so volunteers can start working. In addition to the main task - the collection of scrap metal, they need to prepare areas for its storage. Also there is a plan - a visual inspection of the island and a number of different scientific studies," head of the public Green Arctic ecosociological organization Alexei Rudkovsky said. He said that two groups will land in the territory of the island: 30 people. The first stage will last until July 28, the second will be held from July 27 to August 11. Industrial debris accumulated in the Yamal-Nenets Autonomous District, including on the islands, after the first wave of intensive development of Yamal, which occurred in the 1960-1970s. Then, when developing hydrocarbon deposits, the ecological standards of industrial activity were less stringent, resulting in a large number of so-called objects of accumulated damage. According to Sergey Uramayev, Deputy Director of the Department for International and External Economic Relations of the Yamal-Nenets Autonomous District, the Arctic is the main climate regulator on the planet and to keep it clean is a task not only for Yamal and Russia, but for an international matter.
