Merit-Making Ceremony Held for Beloved Giant Panda

CHIANG MAI, April 26 (TNA) – Chiang Mai Zoo on Wednesday held a merit-making ceremony for giant panda “Lin Hui” seven days after her death.

Fans flocked to lay flowers and write messages of mourning at the panda exhibition zone.

The event was attended by China’s Consul General in Chiang Mai Wu Zhiwu, officials at the zoo and panda fans. They observed a moment of silence to mourn her death and placed white flowers in front of Lin Hui’s picture.

The Chinese Consul General said that he had the same feeling as Thai people who were saddened by the loss of Lin Hui. She had been a goodwill ambassador for almost 20 years.  He appreciated the care of the panda in Thailand. However, the exact cause of death was awaiting the autopsy results from Chinese experts.

Monks were invited to perform a merit-making ceremony for Lin Hui to thank her for creating happiness for Thai people.

In the exhibition area where Lin Hui used to live, zoo staff put life-size photos of Lin Hui on display along with a board for panda lovers to write a message of remembrance for her.

Lin Hui arrived at Chiang Mai Zoo when she was two years old in 2003 together with Chuang Chuang, the male panda, who died in 2019. Lin Hui died on April 19 at the age of 21 years. She had been in Chiang Mai Zoo for almost 20 years. (TNA)
