Ministry of Environment and Climate Change Unveils Detection of Benthic Organisms 

 

 

Doha, February 22 (QNA) - The Ministry of Environment and Climate Change announced the detection of a large number of benthic organisms in various regions of the State of Qatar, stressing that monitoring these organisms is an indication of the high degree of biological diversity on the sea floor, which represents one of the most important food sources in the marine food web.

The Ministry noted that the department of environmental monitoring and inspection found benthic organisms belonging to the mollusk phylum and bivalves, noting that their presence leads to an increase in natural pastures in the Qatari territorial waters because they are considered within the food menu of fish and other organisms. In addition, it contributes to filtering sea water from pollutants and sediments, which embodies its important role in preventing pollution and keeping environmental balance in the marine field.

It pointed out that the presence of these organisms in large numbers was in the coasts, beaches and territorial waters of the State of Qatar in Doha, Mesaieed, Ras Laffan, Salwa, Dukhan, Ras Ashirij, Al Khor, Simaisma, Umm Bab, Al Wakrah, Al Jamil, Ras Rukn, Fasht Al Dibel, Al Ruwais, Umm Al Houl, Al Thakhira, Ras Abu Fontas, Umm Al Maa , Dohat Al Hosn, and Umm Haysh.

The Ministry of Environment and Climate Change stated that the presence of these organisms in large numbers in the Qatari marine environment was as a result of its efforts to preserve marine environment, noting that these efforts included the issuance of relevant legislation and laws, as well as the efforts of the Ministry's teams in preventing pollution and dumping waste in seawater.
