Al Murr addresses the General Assembly of IPU in Uganda

Kampala, Uganda - April 2, 2012 (WAM) - Mohammed Ahmed Al Murr, the Speaker of Federal National Council has stressed that the 126th General Assembly of Inter Parliamentary Union's (IPU) meeting, is currently held in the Ugandan Capital, Kampala, amid the international political, economic and social tensions.
Addressing the meeting attended by the delegations from over 140 countries, Al Murr underlined that the instability, military confrontations, or threat to use force in the face of the limitation of international collective security role, especially the role of United Nations Security Council in settling the regional conflicts, does not augur well for the international peace and security.
He added that the economic and financial challenges threaten the global system, especially in the light of the shrinking economies and growing global food crisis that threatens more than one billion people in the world.
Therefore, Al Murr continued, "the globalisation, the phenomenon that has swept across the world during the past few decades, brought along with it the globalisation of human problems, whose features are clear in different aspects, of which some are environmental, such as the global warming and climate change, including what is economic, such as the phenomenon of financial crises and economic recession. Besides transnational diseases and epidemics, terrorism and piracy." He added that to overcome such international problems, the UAE Parliamentary Division proposes that concerted efforts and will from the political leadership, parliamentary and legislative authorities are required to identify the problems and set solutions.
The UAE Speaker said the Nuclear Security Summit held recently in Seoul represents an international major milestone for curbing the misuse of nuclear technology and materials. He stressed the parliaments and IPU could contribute to curbing of potential nuclear threats and preventing fall of nuclear materials in the hands of terrorist groups.
He added that the UAE Parliamentary Division calls for the Middle East free from the nuclear weapons and weapons of mass destruction, indicating that the Israeli nuclear installations should be subjected to the international monitoring and inspection by the International Atomic Energy Agency. Al Murr warned about the double standard by UN or super powers in this respect. "Israel should not be exempted in the Middle East. It has to comply with the international treaties and resolutions." Al Murr said "we stress that each state has a right to possess the nuclear energy for peaceful purposes with necessary regulations for nuclear safety and compliance with the international agreements in this regard." He added the UAE calls for settling the Iranian nuclear file amicably because any military confrontation in the Middle East could endanger the international stability and security.
Regarding Syria, Al Murr said the UAE Parliamentary Division has proposed an emergency item on the developments in Syria and the ability of international parliamentarians to cease killing, destruction, mass displacements with emphasis on respect of principles of the international human rights law. - Emirates News Agency, WAM
