Army weapons to come under strict control

BANGKOK, June 3 (TNA) -- Army commander-in-chief Gen Chalermchai Sittisart has ordered concerned army authorities to strictly control weapons and ammunition under supervision and prepared to take both legal and disciplinary actions on an army personnel who allegedly sent a parcel containing grenades to an unclear recipient, said an army spokesman. Gen Chalermchai is preparing to take action against the soldier identified only as an army personnel with corporal rank who sent the parcel containing four M67 grenades from Bangkok to the recipient who stayed at a house in Chon Buri’s Phanat Nikhom district. Staff at Kerry Express branch in Bangkok’s Bang Khen district alerted police on Friday afternoon to inspect the parcel sent on May 6 but returned after the recipient was not found. The alert was made after the staff at the shop opened the parcel and found suspicious bomb-like objects. The army spokesman said police are now gathering more evidence and will file a lawsuit against the sender after the investigation is complete. Also, Gen Chalermchai has ordered related agencies to provide facilities to police investigators on the case, the spokesman said. Initial investigation found that the grenades were not connected to the recent three bombing incidents in Bangkok, the spokesman added. (TNA)
