Ex-PM Yingluck delivers closing statement

BANGKOK, Aug 2 (TNA) -- Former prime minister Yingluck Shinawatra delivers a closing statement in the trial in connection of the corruption-hit rice-pledging scheme, saying she is unfairly prosecuted. Ms Yingluck made the verbal statement at the Supreme Court’s Criminal Division for Political Office Holders on Tuesday in the criminal case that she is charged of malfeasance resulting in huge loss in government’s rice-pledging scheme. The court has set a date for handing down its verdict on August 25. Ms Yingluck insisted that she was innocent and never violated the criminal code as charged. The scheme served public interest that her government carried out according to the law and she had no power to stop the scheme operation, she said. Corruption and irregularities in a rice-pledging scheme resulted in over Bt500 billion in losses. Outside the courtroom, a large crowd of her supporters showed up to give moral support amid tight security measures. Many have feared of violence during this highly-anticipated court hearing. (TNA)
