Large Majority Opposes Thai Charter Revision

BANGKOK, December 10 (TNA) - A new poll shows that a large majority of Thais oppose the government’s move to rewrite the national charter. The National Institute of Development Administration (NIDA) said that it found only 34% of the people agreed with the move, while up to 90% had no idea of the proposed charter revisions; another 20% believed changes would only benefit politicians; while 39% said it would lead to conflict in the country. Supachai Jaisamut, deputy secretary-general of the Bhumjaithai Party, said his party would discuss the much-criticised matter in the third reading of the charter revision on December 24. Meanwhile, government officials and political parties attended a ceremony in front of King Rama VII monument in Bangkok on Monday morning to mark Thailand’s Constitution Day.
