PM ensures humanitarian aid for Rohingya refugees

BANGKOK, Aug 30 (TNA) -- Thailand is prepared to give humanitarian aid to Rohingha refugees and will send them back when situations return to normal, Prime Minister Prayut Chan-o-cha said. In response to reports on the likely exodus of Rohingya people due to unrest in the Rakhine State of Myanmar, the prime minister said that Thailand was prepared to cope with possible impacts along its 5,000-kilometer-long border but that did not mean the government would let Rohingya people live in the country. Refugees would receive humanitarian assistance and be repatriated after situations returned to normal, the prime minister said. “I will meet Myanmar Supreme Commander Min Aung Hlaing and discuss security cooperation which has nothing to do with Rohingya regufees. Please do not exaggerate,” Gen Prayut said. Deputy Prime Minister and Defence Minister Prawit Wongsuwon quoted Sen Gen Min Aung Hlaing as saying that situations in Rakhine were controllable and would have no impacts on Thailand. Gen Prawit also said that the supreme commanders of Thailand and Myanmar discussed cooperation on border and narcotic issues and there was not a serious problem for the time being. (END)
