POLICE OFFICERS SENTENCED TO YEARS IN PRISON

Ulaanbaatar, Mongolia /MONTSAME/ Former authorities of the General Police Department (GPD), the City's Police Department and the Patrol and Security Department have been sentenced to some years in prison. The long-lasted trial ended on Thursday in a court chamber of the #461 detention center, and these people were accused of using firearms during the July 1 riots of 2008. Pursuant to a court regulation by the criminal chamber of the UB Sukhbaatar district, Major-General Ch.Amarbold, a former acting head of the General Police Department (GPD); and Colonel Sh.Batsukh, a former head of the Patrol and Security Department were sentenced to 6.6 years; Lieutenant-Colonel G.Ganbaatar, a former head of the Order Section--two years; and Colonel O.Zorigt, a former head of the City's Police Department--to 5.6 years in prison. In accordance with the amnesty law, the years of sentences were reduced for the accused people except G.Ganbaatar. Thus, Ch.Amarbold and Sh.Batsukh have been given 3.6 years, and O.Zorigt--2.6 years. After issuing of the court decision, J.Yarinpil, an advocate for Major-General Ch.Amarbold, reported that the accused will appeal against the court decision. As known, a massive gathering on the Sukhbaatar square protesting agains parliamentary election results ended in a severe riots during which a headquarters of the Mongolian People's Revolutionary party was destroyed and put on fire, many policemen were injured, and five civilians were shot dead.
