UN Lacks Clear Strategy On Afghanistan: Ahmadinejad

Tehran, March 26, IRNA – President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad on Monday regretted that the United Nations lacks specific and transparent strategy on Afghanistan’s affairs. In a meeting with Jan Kubis, UN special envoy to Afghanistan, President Ahmadinejad stressed that the issue of Afghanistan is a crucial and complicated one. Condemning violation of Afghan rights, he said a large number of Afghan people are killed each day by occupying forces and their legitimate rights are violated as an independent state registered at the United Nations. He reiterated that terrorism and drug trafficking in Afghanistan have been expanded to other regional states. Today, Afghanistan is under pressure to sign a security agreement with the United States, he said, adding that insecurity in that occupied country has made the regional developments complicated. President Ahmadinejad stressed that the UN is committed to fulfill basic rights of all world nations. He underlined the need for withdrawal of NATO forces from the entire region without any precondition. President Ahmadinejad urged the UN to help resolve the existing problems in Afghanistan, voicing Iran's readiness to assisst the world body in that regard. Iran's president is currently in Tajikistan to attend the third International Nowruz Celebrations and the Fifth Regional Economic Cooperation Conference on Afghanistan (RECCA V) which kicked off this morning./end
