Work on extending the New START Treaty should begin now, otherwise it will cease to exist in 2021, Russian President Vladimir Putin said at a meeting of the Russian ambassadors and permanent representatives on Thursday. According to the Russian president, the opponents of restoring Russian-US ties in the United States are, in particular, ready to sacrifice their country’s security. "The New START Treaty will expire in 2021. Essentially, we could live without it even a few years ago. Nevertheless, we took the right step by signing this agreement, and, if the work to extend it does not begin today, without delay, it will just expire a year and a half later, it will cease to exist," Putin stressed.
