Qatari Newspapers Editorials

Doha, May 28 (QNA) - In their editorials on Sunday, Qatari newspapers highlighted a number of local, Arab and international issues, including the State of Qatar's election at the 76th World Health Assembly for the membership of the Executive Board of the World Health Organization (WHO) for a three-year term representing Eastern Mediterranean region.
The newspapers also shed light on the Turkish election runoff taking place today, between the candidate of the "People's Alliance" President Recep Tayyip Erdogan, and the candidate of the "Nation Alliance" leader of the Republican People's Party Kemal Kilicdaroglu, after an inconclusive first round on May 14.
On the Arab issue, the newspapers highlighted what is happening in Sudan in terms of aggression and vandalism of the headquarters of diplomatic missions and representations and even the homes of ambassadors, stressing in this regard that based on its supportive stance for brothers, the State of Qatar continues its call for an immediate halt to the fighting in Sudan, the exercise of maximum restraint, resorting to the voice of reason, giving priority to the public interest, and sparing civilians the consequences of the war and battles taking place there.
Al-Raya newspaper said in its editorial that there is no doubt that the State of Qatar occupies a prominent position in term of the strength of its medical sector and the quality of the health services it provides, noting that Qatar is experiencing a medical and health renaissance thanks to the great development in the medical sector which was professionally able to adapt to the requirements of the times and achieve the highest ranks internationally on sustainable health care quality indicators.
In this context, the paper noted the 76th World Health Assembly's election of the State of Qatar for the membership of the Executive Board of the World Health Organization (WHO) for a three-year term representing Eastern Mediterranean region, adding that the State of Qatar will have the opportunity to harness its great and accumulated experience in the health field, to advance the work of the organization and enable it to carry out its work.
Al-Raya stressed that the distinguished presence of the health sector internationally was not limited to the election of Qatar, as Qatar, represented by the Ministry of Public Health  (MoPH), won the WHO award for World No Tobacco Day (WNTD Award), in appreciation of the efforts made in making the FIFA World Cup Qatar 2022 a smoke-free tournament by applying strict measures to combat smoking inside and outside stadiums and fan areas.
The newspaper pointed out that the health sector is one of the most prominent sectors that the wise leadership has given great attention to within the framework of what the health renaissance represents as a main pillar for achieving Qatar National Vision 2030, which puts people at the top of its priorities, adding that past years were marked by a wide package of projects that included all health facilities, as well as a quantum leap on the level of services and health care.
In conclusion, Al-Raya underlined that Qatar has worked to develop a sustainable health system, as it adopted a 'Health in All Policies' approach as a priority within the National Health Strategy. On the other hand, Qatar has become the first country in the Eastern Mediterranean that its municipalities have achieved the status of "Healthy City." This achievement underscores Qatar's advanced level in the field of health and societal well-being. Qatar aims to provide sustainable and healthier options for its population, and it occupies a leading position globally in terms of distinguished healthcare facilities, equipment, high-quality nutrition and health standards.
In another matter, Al-Watan newspaper said in its editorial titled " Democratic Wedding" that the second round of the Turkish presidential elections is taking place Sunday between the candidate of the People's Alliance, President Recep Tayyip Erdogan and the candidate of the Nation Alliance Kemal Kilicdaroglu. This comes after an inconclusive first round on May 14th."
The entire world witnessed one of the most successful elections ever, not only in Turkiye but also globally. From the high voter turnout to the freedom of expression provided to the candidates, and extending to the freedom enjoyed by voters to express their decisions, we were facing an exceptional situation in every sense of the word. It can be described as an unparalleled democratic wedding, the newspaper noted.
Al-Watan concluded its editorial by saying that what has happened in Turkiye and the level of participation in the elections during the first round, strongly reflects the democratic approach that this country is following. It is a testament to the democratic values upheld by the state. We have never witnessed a participation rate approaching 90 % in any part of the world except in Turkiye and this is an indication of the awareness and desire of its people to participate in decision-making and expressing their opinions. It also reflects the commitment of the competitors to present an exemplary model.
For its part, Al-Sharq newspaper said in its editorial that in light of the violent battles and fighting with all kinds of weapons in the Sudanese capital, Khartoum, and the chaos that resulted from those clashes between the army and the Rapid Support Forces (RSF), and with the absence of authority and the vacuum left by the war, vandalism and attacks continue on the headquarters of diplomatic missions and representations, and even the homes of ambassadors.
In more than a month of battles, which began in April, many embassies and headquarters of diplomatic missions were attacked and vandalized, the most recent of which was the attack and vandalism of the house of the Ambassador of the Hashemite Kingdom of Jordan in Khartoum. This was preceded by the attack on the embassies of the State of Qatar, Libya, South Sudan, Somalia, Uganda, India, the Saudi military attache and the residence of the Kuwaiti military attache, as well as other missions and representations.
The newspaper pointed out that many countries of the world and international and regional organizations, led by the State of Qatar, have condemned these attacks, which constitute a flagrant violation of international laws and treaties, the Vienna Convention on Diplomatic Relations, and all laws and customs regulating diplomatic work between countries, stressing the need to provide protection for diplomatic headquarters and missions and to prosecute perpetrators and bring them to justice.
In conclusion, Al-Sharq said that based on its supportive stance for brothers, the State of Qatar continues its call for an immediate halt to the fighting in Sudan, the exercise of maximum restraint, resorting to the voice of reason, giving priority to the public interest, and sparing civilians the consequences of the war and battles taking place there, and it is looking forward that all parties adopt dialogue and peaceful means to overcome differences in a way that guarantees the stability of Sudan and achieves the aspirations of its people for security, stability and prosperity.
Meanwhile, English-language newspaper Gulf Times said that cleaner fuels such as liquefied natural gas (LNG) are becoming increasingly important for an energy-deficit world, which also faces environmental challenges and concerns of energy security. In this context Qatar's supply of more gas to the global market from the North Field expansion will go a long way in meeting the world's growing need for cleaner fuels and reliable supplies.
In its editorial under the headline "North Field gas to meet growing global need for cleaner fuels", the paper said that additional gas from the North Field will be available by 2026, adding that the expansion project will increase Qatar's liquefied natural gas (LNG) production capacity, through the North Field East (NFE) and North Field South (NFS) expansion projects.
The paper pointed out that one of the primary reasons for the shift towards cleaner fuels is the growing concern over environmental pollution and climate change. Liquefied natural gas is considered a cleaner alternative to conventional fossil fuels like coal and oil. Liquefied natural gas is often considered a transition fuel towards a more sustainable energy future. While renewable energy sources like solar and wind power are rapidly expanding, they still face challenges in terms of intermittency and energy storage.
The Gulf Times concluded its editorial by saying that obviously, the transition to cleaner energy sources is essential to mitigate climate change, improve air quality, enhance energy security, and foster sustainable economic development. (QNA)
