Qatari Newspapers Editorials
Doha, May 08 (QNA) - Qatari newspapers highlighted in their editorials on Monday Qatar's firm position supportive to the Syrian people since the outbreak the Syrian crisis 12 years ago.
The Qatari dailies pointed to Qatar's commitment to the Arab consensus regarding the suspension of Syria's membership in the Arab League in 2011; noting that the position of the State of Qatar has not changed, however, it will not be an obstacle to achieving the Arab consensus because it believes in the importance of the joint Arab action and always seeks to support the efforts to realize it.
Meanwhile, the newspapers noted the developments in Sudan, which places responsibility on the Sudanese people to reach a comprehensive and peaceful solution that ends the fighting in the country.
In its editorial titled "Qatar.. A Firm Position in Support of Syrian People's Aspirations", Al-Sharq said that the State of Qatar has been keen on providing all forms of support to the brotherly Syrian people since the outbreak of the Syrian crisis 12 years ago; and its position has remained firm regarding the crisis and is committed to the Arab consensus regarding the suspension of Syria's membership in the Arab League in 2011, due to the violent and bloody campaign carried out by the Syrian regime in response to the peaceful protests. The campaign, which led to the outbreak of a devastating civil war, resulted in the deaths of hundreds of thousands and the displacement of millions.
During its participation yesterday in the extraordinary session of the Arab League Council at the ministerial level on developments in the Syrian crisis - which was resulted in the adoption of an Arab decision restoring Syria's membership in the Arab League after suspending its membership for more than ten years - Qatar's position was clear. HE Minister of State at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs Dr. Mohammed bin Abdulaziz bin Saleh Al Khulaifi said during the meeting that the State of Qatar always seeks to support what achieves the Arab consensus and will not be an obstacle to that, and this consensus is mainly related to the regime's return to the Arab League, noting that the official position of the State of Qatar towards restoring relations with the regime is fully linked to progress in the path of a political solution according relevant international resolutions, Al-Sharq said.
The position of the State of Qatar on normalization with the Syrian regime has not changed. This is an affirmation of its principled position in support of the brotherly Syrian people's aspirations to dignity, peace, development and prosperity. Qatar links any decision to restore relations with the Syrian regime to progress in reaching a political solution that achieves the aspirations of the brotherly Syrian people. In this context, it continues to support all regional and international efforts to find a just solution to the Syrian crisis that respects the unity, sovereignty and territorial integrity of Syria, fulfills the aspirations of its people, and is based on UN Resolution 2254 in all its humanitarian and political aspects, Al-Sharq concluded.
Qatari daily Al-Raya underlined that Qatar's position on the developments in the Syrian situation and the return of the Syrian regime to the Arab League is unambiguously clear and was affirmed by HE Minister of State at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs Dr. Mohammed bin Abdulaziz bin Saleh Al Khulaifi during his participation yesterday in the extraordinary session of the Arab League Council at the ministerial level on developments in the Syrian crisis, and also through the statement of Advisor to the Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs, and official spokesperson for the Ministry of Foreign Affairs Dr. Majed bin Mohammad Al Ansari.
The position of the State of Qatar on normalization with the Syrian regime has not changed, but it always seeks to support achieving Arab consensus and will not be an obstacle to that, because it believes in the importance of the joint Arab action, the paper stressed.
The official position of the State of Qatar on normalization with the Syrian regime is linked primarily to progress in the political solution that fulfills the aspirations of the Syrian people, Al-Raya added, noting that Qatar supports all regional and international efforts to find a just solution to the Syrian crisis that respects the unity, sovereignty and territorial integrity of Syria, achieves the aspirations of its people, and is based on UN Resolution 2254 in all its humanitarian and political aspects.
The State of Qatar has stood by the brotherly Syrian people during the 12 years of the crisis. It has not hesitated to support the Syrian brothers in their ordeal on the humanitarian level, and its position was based on achieving the interests of the brotherly Syrian people, the paper added.
Al-Raya noted Qatar's aspiration that this consensus be a motive for the Syrian regime to address the roots of the crisis that led to its boycott and take positive steps towards addressing the issues of the Syrian people and improving its relations with its Arab surroundings in a way that enhances security and stability in the region.
The State of Qatar supported the legitimate demands of the Syrian people and always called for respecting the will of the people. The well-established Qatari principles in support of the Syrian people stand out in several important positions on all political and humanitarian levels. On the political level, Qatar affirmed its support for the political solution that the Syrian people accept. In terms of the humanitarian aspect, Qatar continued to provide relief to the Syrian people inside and outside Syria, perhaps the most recent of which was the implementation of urgent humanitarian interventions for the victims of the devastating earthquake that struck southern Turkey and northern Syria. Qatar was one of the first countries to send aid and assistance to the areas most affected by the earthquake, and it will continue its humanitarian roles for the benefit of the brotherly Syrian people, Al-Sharq concluded.
For its part, Al-Watan newspaper said in its editorial that attention has always been directed to Sudan, as it is rich in natural wealth and resources and majorly contributes to global food security.
Sudan possesses agricultural capabilities that are the largest in the Arab region, with 175 million acres suitable for cultivation and a forest area estimated at 52 million acres. As for livestock, Sudan enjoys 102 million heads of livestock, moving in natural pastures, an area estimated at 118 million acres. In addition to an annual rainfall rate of more than 400 billion cubic meters. Sudan is also blessed with an enormous mineral wealth, containing ores of iron, copper, silver, mica, talc, manganese, and chromium, with which platinum is present, black sand, gold, marble, and other minerals. Despite this huge amount of wealth, it hardly has an impact on its economy and development, as it has not been properly exploited in over 63 years after Sudan gained its independence from the British occupation in 1956.
Al-Watan concluded its editorial by saying, some believe that the wealth of Sudan is the cause of its instability as no one wants it to rise and benefit from those enormous resources that can transform it into a developed country if dealt with and exploited optimally. While this is true, it is also true that all this destruction taking place and the fighting puts all Sudanese before the reality of the miserable situation into which they deliberately dragged their homeland.
In another matter, the English-language newspaper The Peninsula praised the historical relations between the State of Qatar and the UK, saying that Sunday witnessed the beginning of another great chapter in the age-long bilateral relationship between Qatar and Great Britain, as HM King Charles III was officially crowned as the new King of the United Kingdom.
In its editorial titled "Qatar-UK ties grow," the newspaper said that the coronation had in attendance HH the Amir Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al-Thani and HH Consort of HH the Amir Sheikha Jowaher bint Hamad bin Suhaim Al-Thani and a number of Their Majesties, Highnesses, and Excellencies heads of states and governments, along with senior officials from the UK and around the world who participated in the ceremony.
Qatar and the UK have always enjoyed a very cordial and mutually beneficial relationship since the two great countries came into contact several decades ago. The dispensation of the new king is poised to further reinforce the great bond, noting that the bilateral relations between Doha and London have strengthened over the years since the beginnings of oil and gas exploration in the Arab Gulf region, the paper added.
These relations have expanded to bilateral cooperation in all fields, especially political, economic, commercial, defense, cultural, and educational, as generations of Qataris have studied in the UK.
The newspaper concluded its editorial by noting that Qatar’s wise leadership seeks to transform the country into a global center for knowledge-based and innovation-based industries, to build a sustainable economy capable of achieving high growth rates in the future, and to expand our partnership in the fields of education, health, sports, and security, which are areas in which the United Kingdom is a world leader.
