QC, UNHCR Sign Agreements to Support Rohingya Refugees in Bangladesh, IDPs families in Afghanistan, Yemen

 

 

Doha, March 02 (QNA) - Qatar Charity and the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) signed Thursday a Letter of Intent on a Philanthropy collaboration and three cooperation agreements to help address the most urgent needs of over 50,000 forcibly displaced families in Bangladesh, Afghanistan, and Yemen. 

    Under this Letter of Intent, the QC and UNHCR will collaborate in Philanthropy. Furthermore, with the new contributions, UNHCR will provide shelter and cooking energy to 162,235 Rohingya refugees in Cox's Bazar, provide cash assistance and relief items to 116,669 displaced Afghans, and help 22,980 displaced Yemenis through cash assistance.

    The collaboration is inked through a Letter of Intent signed by Minister of State and Chairman of Qatar Charity HE Sheikh Hamad bin Nasser bin Jassim Al-Thani, and United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees Filippo Grandi, at the UNHCR’s headquarters in Geneva in a ceremony attended by HE Permanent Representative of the State of Qatar to the United Nations Office in Geneva Dr. Hind AbdulRahman Al Muftah, and HE CEO of Qatar Charity Yousef Ahmed AlKuwari.

    On his part, HE Sheikh Hamad bin Nasser bin Jassim Al-Thani emphasized the importance of this strategic collaboration when addressing world humanitarian challenges: "Today, Qatar Charity and UNHCR aim to tap into the potential of philanthropy to bring about social justice for all, including forcibly displaced people, with projects aiming at supporting their most urgent needs in Bangladesh and Yemen and at creating favorable conditions for their safe return in Afghanistan."

    UN High Commissioner for Refugees, Filippo Grandi, recognized and commended Qatar Charity's support to UNHCR's humanitarian response and welcomed the partnership with Qatar Charity as an example of responsibility-sharing and innovative Philanthropy.

    "Every day, wars, persecution, human rights abuses, and climate change force millions of people from their homes, leaving them searching for safety and support." He added: "I am grateful for these timely contributions, and for Qatar Charity’s solidarity and support."

    The letter of intent cements a decade-long partnership between Qatar Charity and the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) during which more than 1.6 million forcibly displaced people around the world were supported with cash assistance projects, livelihoods, shelter, and lifesaving core relief items.
