COVID-19: Thailand Records 2,012 New Cases, Another 15 Fatalities

BANGKOK, April 28 (Bernama) -- Thailand reported 15 new COVID-19 deaths for a second consecutive day, bringing the total fatalities in the kingdom to 178 as the number of patients in critical conditions continue to surge. Centre for COVID-19 Situation Administration (CCSA) assistant spokesperson Dr Apisamai Srirangsan said Thailand recorded 2,012 new COVID-19 cases including 11 imported cases, over the last 24 hours, bringing the total infections in the kingdom to 61,699 cases since the pandemic began in January last year. She said the new fatalities involved Thai nationals aged between 35 and 88 years old where nine from Bangkok, two each from Chiang Mai and Samut Prakan and one each from Chonburi and Ranong. Ten of them got infected from family members, two from colleagues and others through other contacts, she added. “To date, a total of 27,119 patients remained hospitalised with 695 in serious condition and 199 requiring ventilator assistance. “The third wave of COVID-19 outbreak recorded a total of 32,863 COVID-19 cases and 84 fatalities in 28 days,” she said at COVID-19 daily briefing here today. Data showed the number of patients in serious condition as well as those who depend on ventilators had increased from 563 and 150 patients on April 26 to 628 and 169 patients on April 27 respectively. Meanwhile, the Education Ministry has announced the postponement of new school term from May 17 to June 1 as the COVID-19 cases surge. Education Minister Treenuch Thienthong said the ministry has prepared guidelines to ensure the delay would not affect the students as well as the school terms She said the ministry would continue to assess the COVID-19 situation to ensure the delay of reopening would not affect the students academic achievements. “Schools at areas that are slightly affected by COVID-19 maybe start normal lesson (physical classes),” she said. -- BERNAMA
