NUM INAUGURATES WORLD-CLASS LIBRARY ON 75TH ANNIVERSARY

Ulaanbaatar /MONTSAME/ The National University of Mongolia (NUM) inaugurated its world-class new library on October 5. The NUM has commissioned the new library just in time for the celebration of its 75th historic anniversary on October 5-6. The library is thought to be a name card for the NUM, Mongolia’s oldest and leading university which has over 100 thousand alumni. “A library defines the image of a university,” said NUM authorities upon the inauguration ceremony. Mainly funded by the university itself with MNT 16 billion budget, the library has been built in the course of three years. The ground-breaking ceremony was held in 2014. Erected between the first and second blocks of the NUM, the six-storey library building is fully equipped to serve as a model facility for academic research and reading for not only NUM students but everyone, regardless of age and occupation. Non-NUM readers seeking service will have to acquire a membership card. The underground floor of the library is designated for archives; and the first floor for one-window service, book lending service, newspaper and magazine reading room, NUM museum, book store, NUM Brand shop and a coffee shop. Reading rooms are found on the second to fourth floors along with books, catalogue room and lecture rooms. The fifth to sixth floors are dedicated for research laboratories and conference halls of the NUM. “We aim to enhance the functions of the library by introducing Radio Frequency Identification (RFID) system,” said G.Tseren, Director of the NUM Library. At present, the library’s inventory comprises over 400 thousand paper and digital copies of books and publications. Moreover, the library incorporates a digital reading room where more than a thousand CDs, over two thousand master’s theses and access to 16 international online databases are available. With a capacity of serving 700 readers at a time, the brand new library also runs a modern book restoration laboratory. Kh.Aminaa
