By Linda Khoo Hui Li
BANGKOK, July 1 (Bernama) -- Thailand reported 57 new COVID-19 fatalities, a record high for the second consecutive day bringing the death toll in the kingdom to 2,080 since the pandemic began in January last year.
On Wednesday, Thailand reported 53 fatalities.
Thailand recorded 5,533 new COVID-19 cases including 5,521 local transmission and 12 imported cases, over the last 24 hours, taking the total infections to 264,834 cases.
Centre for Covid-19 Situation Administration (CCSA) assistant spokesperson Dr Apisamai Srirangsan said the new fatalities involved 30 men and 27 women aged between 30 and 94 yearz old including 54 Thais, one Cambodian, Pakistanis and Indian.
“To date, a total of 52,052 patients remain hospitalised including 1,971 in critical condition and 566 depending on ventilators,” she said during the COVID-19 daily briefing here today.
To contain the COVID-19 outbreak in Songkhla in southern Thailand, the local authority there imposed a night curfew from 10 pm to 4 am (local time) Wednesday until July 29.
Medical and rescue personnel, workers transporting goods and medical equipment, postal services workers as well as those commuting from airport and those in public transport sector are exempted.
Governor of Songkhla, Jaruwat Kliangklao said restaurants, markets and department stores would remain open until 9pm.
“The spike in number of Covid-19 cases was attributed to face-to-face interactions and contact in risk groups, leading to the spread of the virus,” he was quoted saying by Bangkok Post.
Jaruwat also advised the public to stay home and avoid attending social gathering in bid to break the chain of COVID-19.
On vaccination, a total of 9,9 million people in the kingdom have received at least one dose of vaccine, including 2.8 million who have completed two-dose.
Thailand plans to inoculate 10 million doses of the vaccine in July.
