Malaysia Has A Good Number Of Triathletes To Compete In 2021 SEA Games
KUALA LUMPUR, Oct 22 (Bernama) -- Triathlon Malaysia believes the country has capable triathletes to challenge for medals at the 2021 SEA Games, if host Vietnam decide to include the sport the biennial Games.
Its Coaching and High Performing Athletes Committee lead Ungku Azhar Ungku Mohd Maznan said that despite the triathletes continuing their training throughout the current Conditional Movement Control Order (CMCO) in Selangor, Kuala Lumpur and Putrajaya, the final outcome would be based on the preparation and approach taken in the run-up to the biennial games.
“We have a good number of athletes to represent Malaysia. They have continued training to maintain fitness without any goals insight which is a strain on all of them. All athletes want to race so badly now.
“I believe we have at least two medal contenders…Once conditions permit, we will have national trials planned out as well as centralised training, probably in the first quarter of 2021,” he told Bernama.
Triathlon consisting of three disciplines – swimming, cycling and running - has been growing across the region and was also included in previous editions of the SEA games starting with Philippines in 2005, Thailand (2007), Singapore (2015), Malaysia (2017) and Philippines again in 2019.
The 31st SEA Games is scheduled to be held from Nov 21 to Dec 2 next year, followed by the ASEAN Para Games from Dec 14-21.
