Malaysia To Have Its First Electrical, Electronic Goods Waste Recycling Facility Soon

PUTRAJAYA (Malaysia), July 18 (Bernama) -- Malaysia will soon receive its first machine to recycle electrical and electronic goods waste (e-waste) after local company Shan Poornam Metals Sdn Bhd signed a purchase agreement with a German company, ANDRITZ MeWa GmBH here Monday. Natural Resources and Environment Minister Dr Wan Junaidi Tuanku Jaafar said the machine, the first-of-its-kind in the country and capable of recycling 100,000 tonnes of household e-waste a year, would operate in stages beginning June next year. He said the technology, to be fully implemented in 2018, could treat and process e-waste through a better method using a fully-computerised control system. "The e-waste management from (electrical and) electronic goods such as television, washing machine, air-conditioning and computer is something that is challenging because hazardous items like CFC (chlorofluorocarbon) and mercury have to be handled with extra care," he said. He was speaking to reporters after the signing of agreement ceremony between Shan Poornam Metals Sdn Bhd and ANDRITZ MeWa GmBH at his ministry here Monday. Wan Junaidi said Shan Poornam Metals Sdn Bhd, a Penang-based recycling services facility provider, has 86 e-waste recycling centres nationwide. --BERNAMA
