Melaka Trishaw-Riders Must Play Dondang Sayang Songs

MELAKA, Dec 28 (Bernama) -- Beginning next year, all trishaw riders in Malaysia’s historical city of Melaka have to play ‘Dondang Sayang’ songs as entertainment for their customers or tourists. Chief Minister Adly Zahari said the move was to promote the genre to tourists, in conjunction with Visit Melaka Year 2019 as well as preserve the heritage for future generations. “I hope all licensed trishaw operators in the state must play Dondang Sayang songs and not just contemporary or modern songs,” he said, adding that this way, the trishaw riders would become mini-ambassadors for the state tourism. “This is a way for us to appreciate the recognition given by UNESCO to Dondang Sayang as an ‘Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity’ on Nov 29,” he told reporters after attending an appreciation event for trishaw riders here Friday. Also present were chairman of the Melaka Tourism, Heritage and Culture Committee ​​​​​​​Muhamad Jailani Khamis and general manager of Tourism Promotions in the Melaka Chief Minister’s Department, Zairi Suboh.  At the event, 54 veteran trishaw riders aged 55 years and above received a one-off aid of RM200.
