KUALA LUMPUR, Feb 2 (Bernama) -- The vicinity around Temple Sri Mahamariamman located in H.S. Lee Street in Kuala Lumpur approaching the Thaipusam Day celebration - a Hindu festival celebrated mostly by the Tamil community on Feb 7.

During the celebration, Hindus take a vow to offer a kavadi to idol for the purpose of tiding over or averting a great calamity. Thousands of devotees carry milk pots as offerings or attaching "kavadis" to their bodies.

Kavadi consists of two semicircular pieces of wood or steel which are bent and attached to a cross structure that can be balanced on the shoulders of the devotee. It is often decorated with flowers, peacock feathers (the vehicle of Lord Murugan) among other things. (photoBERNAMA)
