Senegal Tends To Support Mari's Candidacy In WTO

Jakarta, April 25 (Antara) - The Senegal`s official broadcast Radiodiffusion Television Senegalise (RTS) reported that Senegal tends to support Indonesian Mari Elka Pangestu`s candidacy as a secretary general of WTO. The RTS`s Television Director, Seynabou Diop, said during her visit to Antara News Agency in Jakarta on Thursday, that Mari has a good content to be the secretary general of World Trade Organization (WTO) and not many women could achieve a position like she had now. "I think despite she is a woman, which is the only woman candidate as a secretary general in WTO, she is a good candidate and has capability for this position," she said. According to Diop, Senegal was basically tent to support either two African nominee from Ghana or Kenya that listed on the first round of candidacy, as they have the same interest and come from the same continent. But, it had changed after the candidacy was pursued from nine into five nominee which the remained candidates are from Indonesia, Mexico, Brazil, New Zealand, and South Korea. "Indonesia and Senegal are the same emerging country and we have the same interests to develop our countries. I think she will be doing a good position to defend our interests as an emerging country," said Diop. Thus, Diop noted that Senegal has a very good impression to Mari as the believe that she will be striving the interests of the developing countries. "We count on Mari to bring our interest as one of the emerging market communities. Hence, I think we better to support Mari as the secretary general of WTO," she said. As a media person, Diop had a chance to interview Mari directly during her visit to Senegal in early April, 2013, where she noted the impressive vision of Mari to establish an inclusive economy growth that protect the poor, particularly the farmer in rural areas in the developing countries. "And as a woman, we want to support her because of women should help each other, moreover, she has the capability to take that position (as a general secretary of WTO)," she said. In early May, 2013, the WTO committee will be pursing five candidates to two candidates, and then the chosen secretary general of WTO will be announced in the end of May and officially on duty in August 2013.
